UC Riverside's Earth Day celebration on April 22 will feature tables from Campus Business Services (CBS), spotlighting two programs that are quietly making the campus greener all year round: Auxiliary Design Services and ScotSurplus. The pair represents different sides of campus sustainability: one focused on reducing consumption through smart resource sharing and the other on responsible disposal and recycling.
Auxiliary Design Services will use the event to raise awareness of its equipment rental program, which offers campus departments and student organizations a practical alternative to purchasing new equipment outright. By sharing resources across campus, the program helps reduce unnecessary consumption and supports UCR's broader sustainability goals.
ScotSurplus, UCR's surplus property and recycling program, has been making a measurable environmental impact. Since July 2025, the program has recycled more than 34,500 pounds of e-waste, 36,300 pounds of documents through its shredding services and over 82,300 pounds of scrap metal — with the metal recycling program alone estimated to keep roughly 90 metric tons of CO₂ out of the atmosphere each year.
More than 90% of surplus items processed by ScotSurplus are reused, repurposed or recycled rather than sent to the landfill. The program also coordinates campuswide shredding services available to all UCR departments and ensures that 100% of collected copier toner cartridges are recycled.
The CBS copier program further supports sustainability by featuring ENERGY STAR equipment capable of delivering up to 30% energy savings.
Campus Business Services invites students, faculty, and staff to stop by their tables to learn more about ScotSurplus programs, explore the Auxiliary Design Services rental offerings and find out how their department can get involved.
